Why Are Some Knee Scooter Platforms Split?

- One of the fundamental components of a knee scooter is the knee rest. It is where you rest your injured leg over a padded platform. You may have already noticed that some knee walkers have split platforms, and others a solid one.
What's the difference between a knee scooter with a solid pad and a split pad?
The reason some knee pads are split or gap in the middle is that they accommodate the lip of a thick plaster cast, boots, or air-boots with pumps.
This gap allows any protrusion on the cast to alleviate some of the pressure from pushing on your shin.
But here's the thing.
Customers with casts or boots use knee walkers with solid knee pads with no issues. The same is true for customers with no casts or boots. You can use a split or solid knee pad with no problem.
If you are using an air cam boot with the pump mechanism located on the shin of your foot, you will benefit from buying renting a knee scooter with a split pad. The pump mechanism would rest on the gap, preventing from unintentionally pumping air and pressing against your shin. Newer air cam boots have the pump mechanism located on the side to address this issue.
Choose the most comfortable knee rest pad
Be wary of cheap knee walker models that you may find on the internet. These tend to be very limited when it comes to comfortability and adjustability. They tend to have barely any padding on the knee rest platform.
The knee platform, aside from providing your injured leg support, must be able to provide you with prolonged comfort.

Another key feature you want from a knee scooter to optimize for comfort is one that has an off-set knee rest. Having this feature means you can configure the knee rest platform to accommodate a left or a right leg injury. Having the knee rest orientation set accordingly enables your injured leg to rest closer to your body (as it would in its natural standing position). Additionally, this feature prevents your striding foot to hitting the body of the knee scooter.
