How To Use a Knee Walker?
Make sure the knee scooter
is assembled as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions manual provided. The correct knee pad and steering column height will vary from each person. You should be able to stand naturally with your injured leg supported on the knee rest at a 90-degree angle.
Your hips should be even, and your uninjured foot placed flat on the floor. The handlebars should be set at a comfortable distance in front of your body, normally about waist height. You should not be hunched over the unit, but in your normal, upright posture.
Daily Safety Checklist
Be vigilant in making sure that your knee walker is in working condition before use. Make sure your brakes are working and the wheels are turning in the correct alignment with your handlebar, and generally assess the condition of your knee walker make sure no parts are loose or missing.
Beginning Use Of Knee Walker
Before mounting the knee walker, ensure the hand brakes are fully engaged, to prevent it from rolling, then with both hands firmly on the handlebars, mount the knee scooter from one side and place the knee of your injured leg on the knee rest.
Once balanced, disengage the hand brakes and use your other leg to propel you (much like a child’s scooter). Go slowly to start and progress up to a normal walking speed. Use your best judgement and be cautious on inclines and uneven sidewalks. You can now say goodbye to your crutches!
When mounting/dismounting, always make sure the brakes are engaged. You should never mount or dismount on an incline. Doing so could potentially cause injury. The brakes on knee walkers are intended to gradually decrease your speed, not to bring you to a sudden stop.
