  • There are better alternatives to crutches for when you need to take care of your foot injury; the two most popular: are knee scooters and a knee crutch.

They both have their pros and cons, so we would like to help you decide which one is the better choice for you.

    iWalk

The iWALK crutch alternative is a mobility device that allows you to walk hands-free with your injured leg off the ground. It replaces traditional crutches and knee scooters with a safe, stable and easy-to-use walking crutch.

    iwalk crutch modeliWALK 3.0
The iWALK is designed for people who need to be non-weight bearing due to injuries such as ankle fractures, sprains, foot or toe injuries, amputations, Achilles tendonitis, and other non-weight bearing injuries that normally require traditional crutches or a knee scooter.

    Pros

      • • Can be used to go up and down stairs, carefully.

      • • Better alternative to crutches.

      • • Complete hands-free movement.

      • • Allows you to do basic household, work, life activities and chores.

While the iWalk is a great choice for some people, it's not the best option for everyone.

    Cons

      • • Can become uncomfortable if you walk long distances.

      • • Not made for everyone, you have to be in reasonably good shape.

      • • It needs to be strapped on tight, which can be uncomfortable for some folks.

      • • The learning curve can be high.

      • • If you work in an office environment, it can feel awkward when sitting down.

      • • Many users complain about the padding, which can quickly cause strain on the knee and shin.

      • • You have to take the product off and on quite a few times, like each time you go to the bathroom, get in a car, sit down on the couch, etc.

    Knee Scooter

A knee scooter is a two, three, or four-wheeled device that allows you to move around by resting your injured leg on a knee platform while your injured leg is elevated.

Then you push forward with your able foot and control your direction with handlebars like a bicycle.

It's often referred to as a knee walker, knee cruiser, knee caddy, leg walker, or orthopedic scooter.

Many people prefer them over crutches because they are almost effortless to use. Crutches cause a lot of strain and effort to use.

    Pros

      • • Easy to transfer on and off when sitting or going to the bathroom.

      • • Knee pads are comfortable and can be upgraded to extra cushion padding.

      • • Can be comfortable for long-distance use.

      • • Can be used by people of all ages, children, adults, and seniors.

      • • All-terrain models can allow you to move through outdoor terrain easily and smoothly.

      • • Certain models can support users over 275lb.

    Cons

      • • Cannot be used to go up and downstairs.

      • • Requires the use of both hands when moving with the device.

      • • It can be more expensive than an iWalk, but online rental options are available.

      • • Can only be used for below-the-knee injuries.

    Closing thoughts

There is no one best option to suit every person. It all depends on your situation and what fits best for you and your lifestyle.

The important thing is that you get the care and support you need to heal, use these mobility aids properly and safely, follow your doctor's instructions.

Whether you choose an iWalk or a knee scooter, you can regain your independence and to most if not all the things you used to do before your injury.
