What happens if I don't go to the doctor for my broken foot?

According to Medical Practitioner & Anaesthesiologist Steve Black:

If a broken bone goes untreated, it will heal on its own. But, if not treated properly by a doctor, it may cause a residual deformity and disability with you'll have to deal with the rest of your life.

Seeing a doctor is vital if you think your foot is broken. Don't wait before these symptoms get worse. If you do not treat the injury, severe complications can happen. You can develop an infection or have changes in your foot's shape that are long-lasting or permanent.

What does a foot fracture feel like?

Generally, pain that happens during your regular, daily activities and intensifies. You get swelling on the outside of the ankle or on the top of the foot. When you contact at the fracture spot, you feel tenderness. You may also see bruising at the fracture spot.

    Red more about fractures here.

If your pain is mild, it should resolve on its own in a few days or weeks, as long as your rest your foot. But in other cases:

University of Utah Health recommends you see a doctor if you have any of the following:

Can you walk on a fractured foot?

The quick answer is it depends.

The human foot is really complex. It has about 26 bones and over 30 joints.

There are some fractures you should walk on and some others where it is not advised. There are also plenty of accidents that do not affect the bones where there should be little weight-bearing.

What are some easy ways to tell if you've broken your foot?

It varies on the specific injury. But overall, here are some things to look for according to the Mayo Clinic:

    • • Excruciating pain.
    • • Pain that increases with activity and decreases with rest.
    • • Swelling.
    • • Bruising.
    • • Tenderness.
    • • Deformity.
    • • Difficulty in mobility, walking or bearing weight. (inability to wiggle toe, flex foot, toes, ankle, etc)

You need to see a doctor if you have hurt your foot to have your condition diagnosed and adequately handled so that it can recover properly, helping you walk without pain afterward.

Can a broken foot heal on its own?

According to Dr Benjamin Wedro, "Recovery and healing time for a broken foot depends upon the type of fracture and the bones broken."

Most of the bones in the foot will eventually heal with rest, but some fractures may need surgery to repair.

Often, it is the mechanism of injury associated with the intensity of pain that makes the patient seek care. It is appropriate to seek medical care if the patient cannot walk normally without a limp.

What happens if a fracture is left untreated?

According to Mida Atlantic Orthopedic, when a bone fracture is untreated, it can result in either a nonunion or a delayed union. In the former case, the bone doesn't heal at all, which means that it will remain broken. As a result, swelling, tenderness, and pain will continue to worsen over time.

How long should you stay off a fractured foot?

A broken foot or toe may take 4 to 6 weeks to fully heal. However, in some cases, it could take longer. Recovering individuals should follow the RICE principle along with any specific instructions from their doctor. Follow-up X-rays or other scans to ensure proper healing and alignment may be needed.
