  • One of the most common concerns of anyone wearing a cast is how to take a bath with it. Getting a cast even slightly wet can have some consequences.

If you're wearing a cast, you must avoid water at all costs, meaning simple tasks like showering can be inconvenient, and fun outdoor activities like sitting by the pool, beach, or a boat ride can be risky. But it doesn't have to be this way.

In this article, we'll discuss the best way to keep your cast dry. With a good waterproof cover, there is no excuse not to do the things you love.

The Importance of Keeping Your Cast Dry

A cast purpose is to immobilize bones at the injury site and encourage growth and healing.

If your cast gets wet, it can get weakened and begin to soften, which starts to loosen up and can not immobilize your injury correctly. If it got too wet, the cast would need to be replaced.

Additionally, wet casts can cause skin irritations, severe itching, infections, mildew, or even skin breakdowns.

    The Problem With DIY Methods

    people with questions

    1. Holding your cast out. This might seem like an obvious solution, but it's quite unsafe. Water can easily splash or drip into your cast. Not to mention, it will get uncomfortable fast.

    • Tapes – Using strong tapes like duct tape can damage the casting material and irritate your skin. Also, the tape itself can weaken with water exposure.

    • Bags — Using plastic bags does not guarantee a completely water-tight seal. Also, the bag you are using may be contaminated. It would be best if you did not risk putting a dirty bag over your cast.

    • Food wraps – Cling wraps are a pretty common DIY method. It's cleaner than using a plastic bag, but it doesn't provide a water-tight seal. Additionally, they are not intended for medical use.

So what's the best way to keep a cast dry in the shower?

The best way to keep your cast dry is to use a reusable and quality
waterproof cast cover. Cast covers are not limited to only protecting your cast, but also provide water-tight protection to bandages, rashes, abrasions, burns, cuts, wounds, and IV & PICC Lines.waterproof cast cover
Even better, these cast covers are very affordable, so using one is a no-brainer to best protect your cast from water.

There are several brands of cast covers out there, after testing many, we only one we chose to stock is the
waterproof cast covers from TKWC. These have proven to provide a long-lasting, water-tight protection to keep your cast dry.

They have incredibly high reviews, and they are podiatrist recommended.

How to Cover a Leg Cast for Shower

These waterproof cast covers are simple to put on. They just slide up your foot until the seal makes contact with your skin—similar to how you would put on a sock.

The "seal" is made from a non-latex material and stretches easy to accommodate most size legs and casts.
