Happy New Year! Time for New Beginnings Are you Inspired?
- llIndividually and collectively, we all over the world went or are going through hardships caused by the global pandemic. Though realistically, this doesn't mean the challenge is over.
The best thing we can continue to do is to keep being safe ourselves and towards those around us—and take a moment to ponder this new beginning of the year.
In the most basic sense of the term, a new beginning is a starting point for something. Even though any day is a great day to start new habits, most see January 1st as a prominent marker we can use as a mental reset start.
In the original Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, he mentions that each morning he greeted with a question: what good shall I do today?
He then asked himself how much good had he done yesterday. This is an interesting idea because it shows us that when one starts a new year, one should not think ahead or back--there is only now.
But that doesn't mean we have to forget the past and use it as a learning experience.
We can agree that the year 2020 was very unpredictable and cause a lot of pain, distress, and more feelings of uncertainty. With this, many of us have taken the time to recognize and be grateful for the small but meaningful things in our lives.
As I see it, there are three fundamental areas in which we can make sure we upkeep or improve ourselves.
The first is maintaining a healthy lifestyle: eating well, exercising regularly and getting enough sleep - the basics of physical health.
The second is maintaining a healthy mind: being intellectually curious and reading books or listening to music, etc. that expand your horizons and teach you new things and venturing into uncharted territory in both thought and physical space—cultivating the skills needed for independent living.
The third is maintaining good interpersonal relationships: with family, friends, and romantic partners alike. This requires a degree of self-awareness as well as empathy for others.
Hope
We can only hope that this year will be a little less frustrating than 2020, and that you can feel like you move from survival mode and into building mode—and make some progress towards your goals.
We wish you and your loved ones prosperity in the New Year. I hope that you will be able to achieve the goals that are important to you, whether these are material and financial ones or not, and that they will bring happiness into your life.Moving Forward
The New Year is a perfect time to stop and check to see where you are, and continue working on yourself and become the best possible version of yourself. There are many different paths that one could take in order to accomplish our goals, but I believe that they all have an underlying common principle: self-love.
Happiness is not something that can be achieved by simply wishing it. Rather, happiness comes from the realization of your own potential and self-fulfillment.
