  • One of the biggest challenges when recovering from an injury is showering with a cast.

If you have a broken foot, wearing a cast or bandage, you’re probably wondering, what is the best way to keep your foot cast dry when showering?

In this guide, we go over the importance of protecting your cast from water and how to cover it effectively.

    What is a shower bag?

Shower bags—formally referred to as cast covers—are made of durable waterproof materials designed to keep casts and bandages dry when you shower.

different sizes of cast coversWaterproof cast covers of varying sizes.

Additionally, cast covers provide barrier protection for injuries such as abrasions, burns, incisions, and more. It’s wise to protect your cast when you bathe as water on your surgery incision site, and cast can complicate your recovery.

Why bag a cast when showering?

If you have a broken foot, leg, or arm, you must keep your cast dry at all costs. Wet casts can cause issues like odor, skin problems, and needing the cast replaced.

When a cast gets wet, it can weaken and soften. As a result, it will become loose and make it challenging to immobilize your injury correctly. In some cases, your doctor may find it necessary to replace and recast.

The last thing you want is to complicate and extend your recovery.

    Beware of DIY Methods
You may find it convenient to just cover your foot cast with a plastic bag and tape to close off the opening. However, this method can become cumbersome and not be completely waterproof.

We do not recommend this DIY approach as you run the risk of not doing it correctly and risking water getting in your cast—which could lead to complications, as mentioned previously.

There are professionally-made waterproof covers that are reusable, easy to put on and off, and affordable.

What are the best shower bags for foot casts?

So what is the best way to bag a cast for the shower?

The best way to keep your cast dry is with a reusable and quality waterproof cast cover. Cast covers are not limited to only protecting your cast but also provide water-tight protection to bandages, rashes, abrasions, burns, cuts, and wounds.

    Universal size cast cover

Cast covers are available in different sizes: universal leg size, foot and ankle, and extra-large.

Here are some we recommend based on our customer feedback and solid reviews.

    Waterproof Leg Cast Cover

This universal fit cast cover by TKWC will fit almost everyone in the family.

Its unique diaphragm allows for a custom, secure fit around your leg. This seal diaphragm is made from a non-latex material and stretches easily to accommodate most size legs and casts.

The cover bag, crafted with heavy-duty vinyl, can be reused for approximately 6-8 weeks—the average duration of a typical foot injury recovery.

Waterproof foot and ankle cast cover

This TKWC foot and ankle cast cover has the same specs and materials as the one Universal size, except this is tailored to cover your ankle area with a small diaphragm and a shorter vinyl bag.

    Wide cast cover

The diaphragm on the XL size cast cover allows for custom, secure fit around large casts. The diaphragm diameter measures 9.5 inches, compared to the 7 inches on the universal size cast cover.

    Low-pressure cast covers

There are low-pressure cast covers—different from traditional cast covers with a firm seal diaphragm—that instead have a soft and flexible seal against your skin. It provides extra comfort for those who may have sensitive skin.

They come in two sizes: universal, foot and ankle.

    Final thoughts

If you have an injured foot and wearing a cast, be sure not to leave it unprotected.

    A
proper cast bag will provide the protection you need and keep your injury clean—don’t take risks with DYI methods. These doctor-recommended cast covers can make taking a shower much more enjoyable, so don’t hesitate to try one out.

It’s one of the best things you can do for your broken foot recovery.
